Alexander Celebrates 10th Anniversary of Outstanding Military Service in Millington
Thanks Men and Women of the U.S. Navy for Protecting Our Freedom, Defending Nation’s Security

Sen. Lamar Alexander talks with Admiral Sonny Masso before delivering remarks at the 10th anniversary celebration at the Naval Support Station in Millington, Tennessee.
October 3rd, 2008 - Millington, Tenn. - U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) made the following remarks today at the 10th anniversary celebration of the Navy Personnel Command here in Millington:

• “In 1998, the personnel command and the recruiting command came to Millington, and Tennessee became the heart of Navy recruitment and retention. The base has become a permanent facility: a 3,500 acre center with a billion dollar investment – one of the largest in-land installations in the world. Shelby County and Tennessee and the Mid-South gained great new neighbors and increased prosperity.”

• “I’m here today to join in that celebration. I’m also here to thank the men and women of the U.S. Navy for your service to our country. In this age of terror, our freedom and the nation’s security depend upon you, and we never can say often enough how grateful we are to you for that service.”

• “In April, I had a good visit with Admiral Masso, and we talked about the need for updating the GI Bill for Veterans that provides educational benefits to men and women in the service. Chief among the admiral’s suggestions was that the new legislation ought to include a provision that would allow naval personnel to transfer their educational benefits to their family members. That wasn’t in the first bill that was written. But when I went back and worked with a number of other members of the Senate, we added that to the legislation, and it became a part of this historic new updating of the GI Bill. And the reason I tell you that story is to let you know that we’re trying to pay attention to what you tell us, and that conversations here in Millington made their way into a historic piece of national legislation that benefits virtually every man and woman and every family now in our Armed Services.”

• “Congratulations on this 10th anniversary. Thank you for your service to our country, and I look forward to learning from you about recruiting and personnel practices, so that we in the Senate can properly demonstrate our pride and our appreciation and our support for the men and women of the United States Navy.”
