Senators Murray and Clinton to Keep Hold on FDA Nominee

For Immediate Release:
Monday, July 31, 2006

WASHINGTON, DC – Following an 11th hour announcement on Plan B the day before a Senate confirmation hearing on the nomination of Dr. Andrew C. von Eschenbach to head the FDA, U.S. Senators Patty Murray (D-WA) and Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) released the following statement.

"Today's announcement by the FDA is far from a 'yes' or 'no' decision.

"Rather than moving this process forward and doing right by the American people, the Administration is continuing to play a game of smoke and mirrors the day before Dr. von Eschenbach's Senate confirmation hearing.

"Today's announcement is nothing more than another delay tactic. The FDA continues to shirk its duty to serve as an independent agency dedicated to no other goal than the promotion of sound science and the well-being of the American people.

"We will maintain our hold on Dr. von Eschenbach's nomination until a decision is made."
