More than a dozen Hawaii private hospitals have received a total of nearly $18 million in federal and state payments for serving uninsured and charity patients.
Sen. Daniel Akaka and state Human Services Director Lillian Koller distributed the checks, with the biggest one for more than $6 million to Queens Medical Center. Kapiolani Medical Center gets $2.6 million. Straub Clinic has a check for just under $1.5 million. The smallest checks are for Kahuku Hospital and Molokai General Hospital. Each received close to $80,000.
The checks were presented Wednesday at Healthcare Association of Hawaii headquarters.
The money includes $10 million in federal funding, with about $7.7 million in matching funds from the state.
