Pearl River Locks to Remain Open Past June 30

May 20, 2005 -

(Washington, D.C.)U.S. Sen. David Vitter today announced that the U.S. Corps of Engineers has agreed to delay the planned shutdown of access to the West Pearl River Navigation Project, which was scheduled for June 30.

“We are fortunate that the boat launches to the Pearl River Navigation Canal will remain open to the many citizens who enjoy boating and fishing,” said Vitter. “This will benefit St. Tammany and Washington parishes, especially as we approach summer. It is important for Louisiana families to continue to have access to local natural treasures, such as the Pearl River, that have been used for recreation for generations.”

U.S. Sen. David Vitter met with Col. Anthony Vesay and others from the Vicksburg Division of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers last week. In this meeting, Vitter requested that the Corps push back the June 30 deadline for closing the launches and stop construction of gates while the Corps is in discussion with state and parish officials about an alternate plan for keeping public access to the boat launches. In continuing work with the Corps this week, the Corps agreed to let the public have access to the boat launches while the discussions are moving forward.

“I am proud to be part of the team of officials—at all levels of government—who worked together to make this possible,” said Vitter.
