April 30, 2007 - (Washington, D.C.) – U.S. Sen. David Vitter responded to today’s U.S. Department of the Interior’s announcement regarding lease sales on the Outer Continental Shelf for the Gulf of Mexico, Alaska and Virginia. New areas of the OCS will be opened to new, expanded energy production as a result of the passage of the Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act of 2006 that Senator Vitter spearheaded. “The hard work of the Louisiana congressional delegation is finally beginning to bear fruit after a tough fight to pass the OCS legislation. Finally, Louisiana will receive a long-term share of oil and gas revenues that are being produced in its Gulf. These revenues will play an important role in funding our coastal, hurricane and flood protection programs as well as other important state priorities. “In addition, this expanded production in the Gulf of Mexico, Alaska and Virginia will provide a stable, secure source of domestic emergency production. In the current war on terror and climate of rising energy prices, our energy security is a critical priority,” said Vitter. |
