June 23, 2005 - (Washington, D.C.) – U.S. Senator David Vitter announced that $1.78 million in federal funding for Pennington Biomedical Research Center and the LSU Ag Center was included in the Senate Agriculture Appropriations Bill, which passed out of the Appropriations Committee today. “I am grateful that my colleagues on the Appropriations Committee understand the importance of the research at Pennington Biomedical Research Center,” said Vitter. “The innovative research at Pennington may lead to solutions for stemming the tide of obesity in the country.” The $1.78 million for Pennington Biomedical Research Center will be used for continued funding of research to prevent obesity and to develop other research programs to contribute to Pennington’s designation as a USDA Human Nutrition Research Center. The program at Pennington focuses on the prevention of obesity and emphasizes the causes of the current obesity epidemic and the measures to prevent obesity. “While this is only the first step in the legislative process, it is an important one for securing funding for this project,” Vitter said. “I will continue to work with my colleagues to see that this funding is included in the final bill.” The Senate Agriculture Appropriations Bill is expected to move to the Senate floor for a vote later this year. |
