June 22, 2005 - (Washington, D.C.) – U.S. Senator David Vitter today made the following statement on the LNG amendment offered by U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California: “Our governor has an absolute veto power over LNG facilities off our shore under present law. I think she should have that same role in projects actually onshore or in Louisiana waters. “I’m afraid that history has proved that the feds don’t look after our Louisiana interests. They usually just take our energy and abandon us when it comes to dealing with the impacts like coastal erosion.” Today, Vitter voted to allow a vote on Feinstein’s amendment. The amendment would provide the governor the same authority for onshore facilities that he or she already has for offshore facilities. Under the Deepwater Port Act, the Governor can veto, approve or condition an offshore LNG terminal located in federal waters. The amendment would provide the Governor with that same authority for LNG terminals located in state water or onshore. |
