June 22, 2005 - (Washington, D.C.) – U.S. Sen. David Vitter and U.S. Rep. Rodney Alexander announced today that the City of Monroe will receive a federal grant of $800,801 to purchase buses, paratransit vehicles to transport elderly and disabled residents and security cameras. “I am pleased that the U.S. Department of Transportation made this federal money available to the City of Monroe for its public transportation needs. This grant will help improve travel in Monroe and help the city meet its growing demand for public transportation,” said Vitter. Alexander added, “This grant will help improve the City of Monroe's transportation services, which will ultimately help improve the quality of life for many North Louisiana residents. I firmly believe that we can improve our cities by securing funding for many other transportation projects in the future.” The City of Monroe has a fleet of 19 fixed-route buses and three paratransit vehicles. The paratransit vehicles, which are ADA-accessible, supplement the city’s bus service by serving the elderly and disabled in the community. The $800,801 grant will purchase two replacement 40 foot buses, two replacement vans and security cameras. This is the first phase of supplying the buses, vans and paratransit vehicles with security cameras. This grant was awarded by the U.S. Department of Transportation. |
