July 26, 2005 - (Washington, D.C.) – U.S. Senator David Vitter announced that $1 million in federal funding for the Greater Ouachita Port was included in the Senate Transportation, Treasury, the Judiciary, HUD, and Related Agencies Appropriations Bill, which passed out of the Appropriations Committee last week. “This project will increase the infrastructure of the Greater Ouachita Port and make it a more viable option for container transportation,” Vitter said. “I am pleased that my colleagues on the Appropriations Committee understand the importance of this port and the economic benefits it will bring to Monroe and to all of northeast Louisiana.” Vitter secured $1 million for the Greater Ouachita Port to construct and operate a new container handling facility on the Ouachita River. This facility will include a general purpose container dock, rail facilities and the necessary rolling stock and storage area to support these components. This facility will connect the Ouachita region to global trade and commerce. “While this is only the first step in the legislative process, it is an important one for securing funding for the Greater Ouachita Port,” Vitter said. “I will continue to work with my colleagues to see that this funding is included in the final bill.” The Senate Transportation, Treasury, the Judiciary, HUD, and Related Agencies Appropriations Bill is expected to move to the Senate floor for a vote later this year. |
