Vice chairman John D. (JAY) Rockefeller IV Reacts to the Capture of Saddam Hussein

“This is a day of remarkable achievement for our intelligence community, our troops and our military leaders.  The capture of Saddam Hussein represents a significant victory for Iraq and the world and it will bring Iraq one step closer on the road to stability.

“Given the location and circumstances of his capture, it makes it clear that Saddam was not managing the insurgency, and that he had very little control or influence. That is significant and disturbing because it means the insurgents are not fighting for Saddam, they’re fighting against the United States.

“While this achievement will bring the Iraqis the peace of mind that Saddam is not coming back, we should not deceive ourselves into the thinking the violence will stop.

“The capture of Saddam Hussein represents a classic intelligence operation of persistence and analysis and that is exactly the type of intelligence we’re going to need to apply to insurgent cells across Iraq.

“We have a long road ahead of us to rebuild Iraqi institutions and bring about stability so that we can end the occupation in Iraq and bring our troops home.”
