SENATOR ROCKEFELLER REACTS TO TODAY'S WASHINGTON POST STORY REGARDING CIA DETENTION PROGRAMS
“I cannot comment on the specifics of today’s report.
“For the past year, as Vice Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, I have proposed a detailed review of the fundamental legal and operational questions surrounding the detention, interrogation, and rendition of individuals held in U.S. custody. The Committee majority has refused to conduct such an investigation.
“Once again, it appears to me that the White House has dictated that the Republican-controlled Congress not conduct oversight of an important national security matter.
“They have made it clear that anyone who suggests that oversight is needed should be labeled as unpatriotic. The truth of the matter is that American lives are at stake and our officers in the field deserve our support.
“I will continue to press for a review of our detention, interrogation, and rendition programs to ensure that they are effective and supported by sound legal opinions.”
