ROCKEFELLER LAUNCHES NEW WEB SITE

Rockefeller Encourages Reporters and the Public to Use Its Resources

WASHINGTON, D.C. —U.S. Senator Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) today announced that his Senate office web site has been completely redesigned, adding new resources and making it easier to use. Rockefeller encouraged all West Virginians and the press to try out the web site by logging on at http://rockefeller.senate.gov.

Rockefeller said, "The Internet is experiencing dramatic growth and with this comes great communications opportunities. For this reason, we have completely redesigned my office web site so that it takes advantage of new technologies and can be more easily used to receive information and assistance. The new site is designed to be a powerful resource for West Virginia media, families, business people and students."

New information and features will continue to be added to the site, but among the most important features of the new site are:

      - A new "Home" Page that offers direct access to information on the hottest issues that the senator is working on right now. For instance, one of the Senator's top priorities this Fall has been fighting to protect the miner's benefits — and right on the first page of the web site is a link to information about this issue and the ongoing fight.

      - A site-wide search engine that allows users to simply type in a keyword and gain access to all of the related information about that issue on the site. For instance, typing in "Medicare" would quickly give a user links to press releases, issue summaries, a weekly column and more.

      - A "Press" page that offers easy access to most recent press information, including present and past press releases and columns. Users can also download audio files of the senator's recent radio actualities. In the future, the option to view video news files will be added.

      - An "Issues" page that provides information on many of the most important issues that the senator is working on or that are under consideration by Congress. In addition to briefing material on the senator's work on a particular issue, links are included to relevant press releases and to other sites on the Internet that deal with this issue.

      - A "Students" page that includes fun and educational information for young people, including research tools, information about famous people from the state and a link to schools around the state with web sites. Also, every week Senator Rockefeller selects his "Cool School of the Week," highlighting a school in West Virginia with an interesting and informative web site. From the Students page, there is a link to the school selected for that week.

      - A "Services" page that helps constituents purchase a flag flown over the Capitol, request tickets for a tour of the White House and plan a trip to Washington, D.C.

Rockefeller continued, "I hope that people around the state will take the opportunity to see what my new web site has to offer. From learning about legislation I have sponsored to finding out how to get a flag flown over the Capitol, my web site provides information and resources that can be helpful to everyone. We will be continually adding new features and information, so I encourage people to regularly check out the site."

As part of Rockefeller's efforts to use the Internet as a communications tool, Rockefeller is talking today with students at East Fairmont High School about his new web site and issues of concern to them. During the school year, the senator talks with schools around the state as part of his attempt to promote the use of computers and the Internet to expand education.
