Protecting Key Infrastructure

We have made some important progress towards protecting our vital infrastructure and guarding against future terrorist attacks, but there is still much more to do.

I have worked to address the continuing dangerous vulnerabilities in our port security and at our chemical plants. In early 2008 a measure I introduced to help prevent nuclear terrorism was signed into law. I also introduced legislation to improve safety and security at both existing and proposed nuclear power plants, and step up tracking and security of radioactive material that could be used to make a dirty bomb.

I have also worked to improve safety at the Indian Point nuclear power plant in Buchanan, New York. I have pushed both the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and Entergy to improve safety, security and emergency preparedness at the plant, including the siren system. My measure requiring Entergy to install a new siren system with battery backup was signed into law in August of 2005.  Read more about Indian Point >>

We must also do more to protect New York’s northern border while addressing the economic concerns of communities near the border. I introduced legislation to create a Northern Border Coordinator to better manage this important issue.
