The Importance of Reading


Reading is Fundamental
provides information on reading through initiatives such as the National Book Program, Family of Readers, and Books on Menu, all geared toward encouraging children to read and providing resources for parents and teachers.

The National Center for Education Statistics offers a “Nation’s Report Card” on reading, taken from the National Center for Education Statistics.

This National Center for Education Statistic’s report examines the relationship between children’s literary skills before kindergarten to reading and math skills at the end of kindergarten and into first grade.


Scholastic
links to the Kids and Family Reading Report which analyzes reading trends among children and families outside of the classroom setting.

The National Reading Panel provides reports conducted by the National Reading Panel, all with a particular emphasis on teaching methods that help children learn to read.

The National Institute for Neurological Disorders and Stroke provides information about dyslexia from the National Institutes of Health.

The International Dyslexia Association provides information and support for individuals and families affected by dyslexia.

The National Institute for Literacy links to the Put Reading First report, Kindergarten through third grade, developed by the National Institute for Literacy and the Center for the Improvement of Early Reading Achievement.

Reading ASSIST Institute links to a report from the Reading ASSIST Institute that emphasizes the importance of vocabulary in reading comprehension.

The Partnership for Reading is a collaborative effort by three federal agencies - the National Institute for Literacy (NIFL), the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), and the U.S. Department of Education - to bring the findings of evidence-based reading research to the educational community, families, and others with an interest in helping all people learn to read well. First established in 2000, The Partnership is now authorized by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001

The Middle Grades Reading Network has links to reports on the study of reading in Indiana middle, junior and senior high schools.
