I am very concerned about the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction from countries like Iran and North Korea, and believe that it is one of the greatest threats we face today. The possibility that a terrorist organization may acquire such a weapon grows as more unstable regimes develop weapons of mass destruction. It is my firm believe that the United States must do all it can to stop the spread of these weapons.
The danger of Iranian possession of long or short range missiles in addition to nuclear weapons is considerable. These weapons pose a threat to Israel, moderate Arab countries, and to U.S. forces both in Europe and the Persian Gulf region. We cannot stand by and allow our allies the opportunity to provide equipment and technology to Iran. Short term economic gains should not override our long term security interests.
Although I agree that diplomacy should always be the primary means of negotiation with North Korea, I believe that we must also recognize the reality of situations and understand that further actions may be necessary. North Korea has referred to UN sanctions as a “declaration of war,” and their continued disregard for diplomatic attempts made by several nations demonstrates their unwillingness to work with the international community. I believe that this situation in North Korea highlights our country’s need for a national missile defense system.
