harkin announces more than $100,000 in rural development funding to assist 34 low income families

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today announced $107,740.47 in rural development funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to aid 34 low income families in Iowa.  The funding was administered through the Housing Preservation Grant program.

Harkin is Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry.

“Aiding low income families is critical, no matter where they are located, but is particularly more urgent in rural America where resources can be few and far between,” said Harkin.  “This funding will improve the lives of these Iowa families, while at the same time increasing the energy efficiency of their homes and reducing expenses.  I congratulate both recipients on this competitive funding and I look forward to the improvements they will generate.”

The following Iowa recipients received funding:

Region 6 Planning Commission received a grant of $53,870.23 to assist 12 very low income families to eliminate health and safety hazards and increase energy conservation in their homes to reduce heating and cooling bills.

Region XII Council of Governments received a grant of $53,870.24 to assist 22 very low income families to eliminate health and safety hazards and increase energy conservation in their homes to reduce heating and cooling bills.
