Water has played an essential role in the economic growth of the western United States. Water is a relatively scarce resource in the West. Colorado officials work hard to ensure that her citizens have enough water. The distribution of water to other states is regulated by a series of interstate compacts; these compacts were signed into law decades ago and they determine the amount of water given to each downstream state. The state plays an essential role in managing water, and we should not be altering our compact agreements.
Generally, water regulations are made and enforced at the state, rather than the federal level. I believe that my role - as a federal legislator - is to protect the rights of states to continue to make the decisions that affect their water, and will continue to do so.
