U.S. Government Announces Winners of the 2008 Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation Program

Ashgabat, October 16, 2008 – Yesterday, the U.S. Embassy held an award ceremony to honor the winners of the 2008 Ambassador's Fund for Cultural Preservation grants at the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy. This year, two grantees will receive funding from the United States:
1. Turkmenistan Institute of History under the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan for research, restoration and conservation of the Ismamyt – Ata Mausoleum of the 11th and 12th Centuries in Dashoguz Province. ($42,500.00)
2. The National Administration for Preservation and Restoration of Historical Monuments of Turkmenistan for conservation of the 9th and 10th Century Shir-Kebir (Mashad Ata) Mosque in Ancient Dehistan by ($33,100.00) U.S. Chargé d’Affaires, a.i., Sylvia Curran gave her opening remarks and presented the winners with congratulatory letters.
The grantees briefly described their projects. Representatives from Turkmenistan’s Government, involved in administering programs related to the cultural and historical heritage of Turkmenistan and Turkmen state media representatives participated in the ceremony. more

Ashgabat, October 15, 2008 – An Interactive Multimedia Learning Center was opened by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX), at the Maktumguly Language and Literature Institute of the Supreme Council of Science and Technology under the President of Turkmenistan on October 15, 2008. The center will help prepare educators and specialists to use computer technologies and the Internet in the classroom, furthering their professional development. The new center is one of five in Turkmenistan and over 40 such U.S.-supported centers in Eurasia that are administered by IREX under the USAID-funded the Internet Access and Training Program (IATP).
Education and technology development is a priority for the Government of Turkmenistan, which has called for computers and Internet to be available in every school across the country. The USAID-funded IATP program provides technical assistance in integrating information and communications technologies into education. The program trains over 100 Turkmen citizens per month; its network of multimedia learning centers has already provided computer and internet services to over 15,000 in Ashgabat, Turkmenabat, Dashoguz, and Balkanabat. more
