WASHINGTON, DC – Today Sen. Kerry issued the following statement on the 10th anniversary of the fatal shootings of two U.S. Capitol Police Officers killed in the line of duty:

“Today everyone should we take time to remember two American heroes--Detective John Gibson and Officer Jacob Chestnut--who sacrificed their life in the line of duty here in our nation’s capitol. There’s not a Senator alive who will ever forget where they were that awful day, or the way the tragic shooting reminded many never to take for granted the service of those who protect this special place and the hundreds of thousands of visitors who pass through its doors every year. Their service should be honored and respected – always.”

Detective John Gibson was a native of Massachusetts and a part of the Dignitary Protection Detail Unit of the US Capitol Police force, and Officer Jacob Chestnut was an 18-year veteran of the Capitol Hill police force.
