KERRY, KENNEDY AND FRANK ANNOUNCE FUNDING TO COMPLETE ROUTE 106 REHABILITATION

Congressman Barney Frank and Senators Edward Kennedy and John Kerry announced today that the omnibus appropriations bill approved by Congress over the weekend includes, at their request, $1.98 million for the Route 106 Underpass rehabilitation project, a sum that is sufficient to complete the project, the total cost of which is estimated at $3.2 million.

The three lawmakers had secured $1.25 million in funding for the project over the last two years. The underpass has degraded over time because of heavy traffic and the fact that it lies below the water table. The rehabilitation project has been identified by Mansfield Town officials as their top priority project requiring federal assistance. "I am delighted that there is now sufficient money available to complete the project," Frank said. "The underpass is at the site of a major transportation node, and it is essential that we take this important step to ensure that it doesn't impede the flow of traffic through the region." “We felt from the beginning that this project shouldn’t fall solely on Mansfield’s shoulders,” Kennedy said. “”I am grateful our colleagues have agreed, and I look forward to the completion of the project.” "This will help traffic on Route 106 in Mansfield move more freely, easing commute times and reducing pollution from idling engines,” Kerry said. “I am very pleased to work with Congressman Frank and Senator Kennedy to get the funding needed to complete this important transportation project." “I am very pleased to hear about this funding,” said Selectman Mike McCue. “The Route 106 Underpass Rehabilitation project is important not only for the town of Mansfield, but the region as well. The Mansfield train station has become a major commuter rail option for many traveling back and forth to Boston and this infusion of federal money should allow for its long awaited reconstruction.” “The residents of Mansfield can thank Barney Frank and his colleagues for this federal funding,” said Town Manager John D’Agostino. “This will finally result in a resolution to the hazardous conditions cased by the Route 106 underpass.”
