John Kerry on Today’s Deficit Numbers

Below is a statement from Senator John Kerry on the deficit numbers released today:

“Americans deserve better than watching record high deficits be applauded because they’re not quite the record high that Washington guesstimated. This sloganeering that proclaimed ‘mission accomplished’ in Iraq and slapped Brownie on the back for doing a ‘heck of a job’ won’t restore fiscal discipline to Washington. “We’re borrowing trillions of dollars from Social Security just as the first baby boomers are nearing retirement, and the $8.5 billion in debt we’re wracking up every month in Iraq is treated as ‘Monopoly money’ that doesn’t count as spending on the books.

“We need a genuine effort to rein in runaway federal spending, restore some semblance of fiscal responsibility, and get the train back on the tracks.” # # #
