John Kerry Statement on GAO Investigation into Voluntary Corporate Climate Change Programs

Today the General Accounting Office released a report requested by Senators John Kerry and John McCain on two voluntary programs – Climate Leaders Program at the Environmental Protection Agency and Climate VISION at the Department of Energy – that encourage corporations to set their own greenhouse gas emissions reductions goals. The GAO found that the government should do more.

Below is a statement from Senator John Kerry:

“Like all the news coming out of the Bush Administration with respect to global climate change and corporate accountability, this, too, is disturbing. Just as President Bush continues to willfully ignore the scientific evidence that tells us we need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, he also continues to believe that letting companies police their own emissions is good for the environment and our health. It’s wrong.”
