STATEMENT OF SENATOR JOHN KERRY

REGARDING: TODAY’S VOTE TO DEFEAT GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE LEGISLATION

WASHINGTON, DC – Senator John F. Kerry (D-Mass.) issued the following statement regarding today’s vote to defeat bipartisan global climate change legislation:

“Today’s vote to kill bipartisan climate change legislation was yet another example of President Bush and his Republican colleagues in the Congress repeatedly choosing to put the wants of their special interest contributors ahead of the needs of America’s families.

“I am disappointed that this common sense approach to tackle global warming was rejected by the U.S. Senate today. This bipartisan legislation provided an innovative solution to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the short-term, but at the same time provide market-based flexibility to minimize the costs to industry.

“The challenge of addressing global warming is upon us, and if we let it continue unabated, its impacts are potentially devastating not only to the environment and health, but to our economy. Instead of these repeated efforts to do the bidding of corporate polluters, we need a president who will take on these special interests and put the needs of America’s families first.”
