World Data Center for Geophysics & Marine Geology, Boulder

The Index to Marine & Lacustrine Geological Samples

Minimum requirements for entry into the database are ship, cruise, sample, sampling device, and latitude/longitude of collection. Data are preferred in spreadsheet form, but NGDC will work with contributors to adapt data in other electronic forms.

Download the Index to Marine & Lacustrine Geological Samples Entry Program:

  • Curators' Entry Program Spreadsheet Template (set your browser's .MIME type for .xlt files to Excel to launch Excel automatically)
  • Readme file for above
  • Data parameters list
  • Complete codes list/coding information
  • (At a later date, we hope to have on-line entry available. Currently, please choose the README above to download instructions for the spreadsheet entry program, then choose the entry program to download it. This version of the entry program was posted in August 1999 and contains some corrections to pull-down explanations of weathering/metamorphism codes. Please replace previous versions of the entry program with this new one. We have incorporated all comments about bugs/fixes received to date in the new spreadsheet program.)
  • (The above is an area designed for curators to view new samples that have been received & processed at NGDC. This is a final step in quality control of new samples before they are added to the main database. The area is only available when you have been notified that your samples are ready for review. Use the search criteria of your Curatorial Facility plus any others you wish. We recommend using the Plot results option, once you have selected your samples, to check their locations, especially color coding cruises, etc. to see if samples are not grouped properly geographically.)

The Curators' database parameters and codes were designed by the Curators of Marine and Lacustrine Geological Samples Consortium. Modifications to parameters and definitions since 1977 are be approved by the group, which meets approximately every 2-3 years and corresponds via list server between meetings.
