Layoff warning law too often has more holes than help for the newly jobless

Workers at Enterprise Rent-A-Car in St. Louis got a rude shock recently.

“Basically, an e-mail went out on a Monday saying there would be layoffs, and the next day, Oct. 28, we had layoffs,” said one of the 200 suddenly looking for new jobs.

A little more warning — and perhaps a tougher layoff law — would have helped, he said, asking for anonymity to help in his worried search. “It’s a terrible job market, absolutely horrible, so even if there are jobs, you aren’t going to get a lot of response. I’ve applied for 45 openings and I’ve had one interview.”
