Senator Akaka congratulates Mid-Pacific Institute Senior Kelli Anae, Hawaii's Poetry Out Loud state champion, and her teacher, John Wat.  Kelli, a resident of Louisiana with relatives in Hawaii, was displaced from her home in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.  Kelli placed third in the national competition winning a $5000 scholarship. Philippines President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo presents Senator Akaka with the Order of the Golden Heart.  As Chairman of the Veterans’ Affairs Committee, Akaka recently fought to secure passage of a bill which honors the service of Filipino Veterans who fought under U.S. command during World War II by restoring the benefits and recognition they were promised over half a century ago. Senator Akaka welcomes Barbara Favela to his office.  Barbara's husband Steve, a Honolulu Police Officer, was tragically killed in the line of duty while protecting the President of the United States in a motorcade last year at Hickam Air Force Base.  Accompanying Barabara are their children: Keahi (8), Kiana (6), Matthew (3) and Jacob (9 months).  Sen. Akaka offered Barbara his sympathy for her loss, reminded her of the important and honorable work Steve did as a member of the Honolulu Police Department, and assured her that her husband will never be forgotten.
