Philippines President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo presents Senator Akaka with the Order of the Golden Heart.  As Chairman of the Veterans’ Affairs Committee, Akaka recently fought to secure passage of a bill which honors the service of Filipino Veterans who fought under U.S. command during World War II by restoring the benefits and recognition they were promised over half a century ago. Senator Akaka welcomes Barbara Favela to his office.  Barbara's husband Steve, a Honolulu Police Officer, was tragically killed in the line of duty while protecting the President of the United States in a motorcade last year at Hickam Air Force Base.  Accompanying Barabara are their children: Keahi (8), Kiana (6), Matthew (3) and Jacob (9 months).  Sen. Akaka offered Barbara his sympathy for her loss, reminded her of the important and honorable work Steve did as a member of the Honolulu Police Department, and assured her that her husband will never be forgotten.
