As part of the program, Holliday is interning at the Office of U.S. Senator Barack Obama, and Leopoldo, a former intern of Senator Akaka's, is interning at the Office of Hawaiian Affair's Washington, D.C. office. Philippines President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo presents Senator Akaka with the Order of the Golden Heart.  As Chairman of the Veterans’ Affairs Committee, Akaka recently fought to secure passage of a bill which honors the service of Filipino Veterans who fought under U.S. command during World War II by restoring the benefits and recognition they were promised over half a century ago. Senator Akaka welcomes Barbara Favela to his office.  Barbara's husband Steve, a Honolulu Police Officer, was tragically killed in the line of duty while protecting the President of the United States in a motorcade last year at Hickam Air Force Base.  Accompanying Barabara are their children: Keahi (8), Kiana (6), Matthew (3) and Jacob (9 months).  Sen. Akaka offered Barbara his sympathy for her loss, reminded her of the important and honorable work Steve did as a member of the Honolulu Police Department, and assured her that her husband will never be forgotten.
