PHOTO: Improving Spokane’s Monroe Street Bridge

For Immediate Release:
Tuesday, May 27, 2003

Senator Murray visited the Monroe Street Bridge in Spokane and got an update from Mayor John Powers (right) on efforts to restore the aging bridge. The bridge carries about 25,000 vehicles every day, but is unstable and prone to earthquake damage. Murray secured $3 million in the fiscal year 2003 Transportation Appropriations Act to help repair and restore the bridge.

Investing in our transportation infrastructure reduces congestion, improves safety, and lays the foundation for our future economic growth. In addition to being part of a critical transportation route, the Monroe Street Bridge is a symbol of Spokane’s heritage. This restoration will enable the bridge to continue in service for at least 75 more years.
