DOLE INTRODUCES BARRACKS IMPROVEMENT BILL
Legislation will ensure accountability for Army housing conditions |
|
May 5th, 2008 - Washington, D.C. - U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole today introduced legislation to improve the living environments and quality of life for soldiers. Her bill will expand the Army’s First Sergeants Barracks Initiative (FSBI), which ensures accountability for the maintenance of barracks. Dole’s action comes after an online video posting revealed substandard conditions in barracks at Fort Bragg, N.C.
“We must ensure accountability for the conditions of Army barracks,” said Dole. “Our soldiers deserve safe, clean housing, and anything less is unacceptable.”
The FSBI transfers responsibility for daily maintenance operations of barracks from their occupying units to a maintenance team working for the post command. This initiative makes certain that problems that arise while units are deployed are taken care of early before compounding into larger problems. Other program goals include reducing maintenance response time and extending the life of furnishings and renovations.
An FSBI pilot program has been successful at Fort Hood, Texas. Dole’s bill calls for implementing the program at all Army installations.
Background
On Friday, April 25, Dole’s office was contacted about the Fort Bragg barracks video posting and immediately contacted Army Secretary Pete Geren’s office to look into the matter.
Last week, Dole sent a member of her legislative staff to Fort Bragg to evaluate the conditions of the barracks.
