On Monday, May 21, the Senate debates S. 1348, the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2007. Last week, a bi-partisan group of Senators reached an agreement on several key provisions in S. 1348, allowing the measure to advance to the Senate floor. A cloture vote on the Motion to Proceed to S. 1348 will occur late Monday afternoon.

Also Monday afternoon, I will meet with students from Kualapuu School on Molokai who end their study tour of the east coast with a visit to Washington, D.C.

Later Monday afternoon, I will participate in a Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs markup of various bills and the nomination of Howard C. Weizmann as Deputy Director of the Office of Personnel Management.

Tuesday morning, I will co-chair a joint House and Senate hearing on Government Accountability Office personnel reforms.

Also Tuesday morning, I will preside over a meeting of the Veterans' Affairs Committee to vote on the nomination of Dr. Michael Kussman to be VA's Under Secretary for Health. This position is the head medical official in the Department of Veterans Affairs and it is vital that the position be filled promptly.

Tuesday afternoon, the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee meets to discuss FEMA reforms and whether we are prepared for the 2007 hurricane season.

Also Tuesday afternoon, my Armed Services Subcommittee on Readiness and Management Support meets to markup the Subcommittee's portion of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2008.

Wednesday morning, I will meet with Armed Services Chairman Sen. Carl Levin to discuss priorities for the Fiscal year 2008 National Defense Authorization Act.

Later Wednesday morning, I will chair a Veterans' Affairs Committee hearing on a whole roster of health legislation, including my bi-partisan legislation on improving care for veterans with traumatic brain injuries.

Also Wednesday morning, I will attend an Energy and Natural Resources Committee meeting to consider several pending bills.

Wednesday afternoon, I will meet with about 70 students, teachers and parents from Kapolei Middle School. After our meeting the group will tour the Capitol building.

Also Wednesday afternoon, I will attend a Armed Service Committee markup of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2008.

Thursday morning, the Armed Services Committee continues its markup of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2008.

Thursday afternoon, I will be an honored guest during an event organized by the Gold Star Wives, an organization of military widows/widowers whose spouse died while on active duty or from service connected disabilities. During the event, I will receive a Gold Star Wives Appreciation Award for "outstanding leadership and untiring efforts on behalf of America's survivors."

Later Thursday afternoon, I will meet with students from Molokai's Kaunakakai Elementary School.

Also Thursday afternoon, I will meet with Wayne Nastri, the EPA's Region 9 Administrator, to discuss important environmental issues facing Hawaii.

Our Senate Democratic leadership tells us to expect a number of votes on Friday, our final Senate work day before the Memorial Day District Work Week.
