 Weekly Report

Week of Monday, March 19

March 19, 2007

On Monday, I visit with students from Kaimuki and Kawananakoa Middle Schools who are here with their teachers and chaperones to learn about our Nation's Capital and our federal government. I'm looking forward to talking to these young people, who represent the future of our state and our country. Also visiting this week are students from Kapaa High School, Waiakea Elementary School, Moanalua High School, St. Patrick School, Lahainaluna High School, Waipahu Intermediate School, Kohala High School, and Maui Community College.

Monday afternoon, I meet with Papa Ola Lokahi and other representatives of the Native Hawaiian Healthcare System who are in Washington, DC to participate in a national conference of community health centers.

Tuesday morning, the Armed Services Committee hears from Air Force Secretary Michael Wynne and Air Force Chief of Staff General T. Michael Moseley who will review the Air Force's FY 2008 budget.

Tuesday afternoon, I am proud to host the roll out of a new book honoring Japanese American World War II veterans. Nisei Linguists, Japanese Americans in the Military Intelligence Service During World War II, by Dr. James McNaughton, chronicles the history of this select band of American soldiers who are credited with shortening the war in the Pacific.

Wednesday morning, I will be attending the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee hearing: Government Accountability Office's Assistance to Congress, and Overview of Past Work and Future Challenges and Opportunities.

Wednesday afternoon, Sandy Baz, Executive Director of Maui Economic Opportunity, will be by to update me on their new transportation facility and other projects. MEO is celebrating their 42nd year of helping Maui's people.

Wednesday evening, I will attend a reception commemorating National Medal of Honor Day. Allan Kellogg, a Medal of Honor recipient from Kailua, will also be in attendance.

Thursday morning, I meet with the National Commander of the American Legion, Paul Morin, who will be in my office to discuss various issues affecting the veteran community.

Later Thursday morning, I meet with Harry Fukuhara, a World War II veteran who served in the Military Intelligence Service, to get an update on the effort to preserve Building 640 at the Presidio in San Francisco. Building 640 is a historic structure that served as a center point for many MIS activities in World War II.

Thursday afternoon, I chair the Subcommittee on Oversight of Government Management hearing: Safeguarding the Merit System Principles, A Review of the Merit Systems Protection Board and the Office of the Special Counsel.

Friday afternoon, I will tour the Capitol Visitor Center construction site. The CVC is being built on the east lawn of the Capitol. From its inception, the Capitol Visitor Center has been conceived as an extension of the Capitol that welcomes visitors to the seat of American government. At nearly 580,000 square feet, the CVC is the largest project in the Capitol's 212-year history.
