 Weekly Report

Week of Monday, January 29.

January 29, 2007

This Monday, I meet with Honolulu Prosecutor Peter Carlisle to discuss various law enforcement issues, including federal funding for Hawaii's Drug Courts. Mr. Carlisle is in Washington attending the annual National District Attorneys Association conference.

On Tuesday morning, I will attend the Armed Services Committee hearing on the nomination of Admiral William Fallon as Commander of the US Central Command.

Later that morning, I will meet with Jimmy Lake of the Hawaii Air Traffic Controllers, who is in DC to attend their annual conference.

Tuesday afternoon, the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works will meet to discuss S. 309, the Global Warming Pollution Reduction Act of 2007. Depending on my schedule, I will deliver testimony in favor of this legislation, for which I am pleased to be an original cosponsor.

Also on Tuesday afternoon, I will meet with Hawaii Board of Education members Karen Knudsen and John Penebacker to discuss education issues.

Wednesday morning, I will participate in a Government Accountability Office (GAO) press conference announcing the new High Risk List. As Chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Subcommittee on Government Oversight, I've been active in our series of hearings on high risk areas.

Also on Wednesday morning, I look forward to meeting with my House counterpart, Representative Bob Filner, who is Chairman of the House Veterans' Affairs Committee, to discuss veterans issues and our respective agendas for the 110th Congress.

Two bills I support are being considered in the Energy and Natural Resources Committee. I am confident the Paleontological Resources Preservation Act, which I introduced, and the Compact of Free Association Amendments Act, which I cosponsored, will be passed out of the Committee to the Senate.

Wednesday afternoon, I am chairing the Armed Services Subcommittee on Readiness hearing on abusive practices in Defense Department contracting. Our witnesses include, Acquisition Advisory Panel Chair Marcia Madsen and Office of Federal Procurement Policy Administrator Paul Dennett.

Thursday morning, I will attend the 55th National Prayer Breakfast at the Washington Hilton. Each year, we are joined by a number of international guests. This year, it is my honor to serve as host for two members of the Croatian government: Parliament member Dr. Mario Zubovic and National Security Committee Chairman Ivan Jarnjak.

Later that morning, I will deliver the keynote address at the Consumer Federation of America's conference. My speech is entitled "Financial Literacy: Education, Consumer Protection, and Economic Empowerment."

Also Thursday morning, the Senate Energy Committee will examine the status of biofuel development and a strategy to increase their use in our nation's transportation fuel mix.

Thursday afternoon, my Subcommittee on Government Oversight will meet to consider the privacy implications of the federal government's Health Information Technology Initiative.
