Lieberman Joins Colleagues on Bipartisan Bill to Equip Workers for ‘Skills Revolution’

WASHINGTON – Senator Joe Lieberman today joined Senators Mike Enzi (R-WY), Max Baucus (D-MT), Elizabeth Dole (R-NC), and Lamar Alexander (R-TN) in introducing legislation to help universities, colleges and other institutions of higher education develop a stronger link to the workforce.

As the American economy enters a “skills revolution”, The Higher Education Affordability, Access and Opportunity Act of 2004 is designed to give workers the means to adapt to the transformation. Under the legislation students could receive more relevant postsecondary education and training that would help them be more self-sufficient and better equipped to meet the workforce demands of local economies. Parents and students would also be able to access and understand data on individual schools, helping them make the choice that best fits their needs.

“In order for America to maintain its economic edge, our workers must continue to be the most highly-skilled and best-trained in the world,” Lieberman said. “Our bill encourages coordination between colleges and the business community to prepare a new generation of skilled workers to keep our nation competitive.”
