Non-Partisan Environmental Group Awards Perfect Rating to Senator Akaka

October 17, 2008

Washington, D.C. - The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) today released its 2008 National Environmental Scorecard which rated Senator Daniel K. Akaka (D-HI) at 100% for his votes this year to protect the environment and support clean energy.

Senator Akaka said: "In Hawaii, we know our environment is one of our most valuable and most fragile resources.  I was proud this Congress to support legislation, now law, that provided the first increase in fuel efficiency standards in decades, set ambitious standards for renewable fuels grown in the U.S., and makes our country more energy efficient and independent.  I will continue to advocate for energy conservation and strengthening our nation's renewable and alternative resources."

According to LCV, the 2008 Scorecard includes 11 Senate votes dominated by energy but also encompassing other environmental issues.  The average Senate score was 57 percent.  The non-partisan scorecard has been used to gauge how members of Congress voted on key energy and environmental issues for the past 30 years.

The LCV scorecard is available at: http://lcv.org/scorecard/

Senator Akaka is a senior member on the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources and Chairman of the Subcommittee on National Parks.
