"We
are dedicated to building partnerships within communities to alleviate
the conditions and causes of poverty."
Community Action Agencies (CAA) are non-profit public and private
organizations created to fight poverty at the local level. The CAA
network was established under the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964,
which was signed by Lyndon Johnson and declared an "unconditional
War on Poverty". Today, community action agencies are quite often
the primary source of support for more than 32.3 million people living
in poverty in the United States. Upper Des Moines Opportunity, Inc.
is one of 18 Community Action Agencies in the State of Iowa. Upper
Des Moines Opportunity, Inc. was formed more than 32 years ago.
UDMO strives to deliver a wide
range of high-quality services to individuals, families, and children.
Although we continue to experience a fairly strong economy and low
unemployment rate, there are many in our area who still need services.
Many of these individuals and families are our "working poor",
earning low wages or living without health insurance and other benefits.
UDMO's wide range of high-quality
services provides a helping hand during times of crisis, aiding
families as they get back on their feet. Compassionate staff members
work diligently to provide continued support, encouraging families
to achieve self sufficiency. |
