STATEMENT OF U.S. SENATOR DANIEL K. AKAKA ON THE DEATH OF PRESIDENT RONALD REAGAN

June 6, 2004

Paris, France -- U.S. Senator Daniel K. Akaka (D-Hawaii) issued the following statement on the death of former President Ronald Reagan from Paris, France, where he is participating in ceremonies marking the 60th anniversary of D-Day at Normandy:

"Ronald Reagan championed the causes of freedom and liberty that all Americans hold close to our hearts. An American idealist, who was always steadfast in his belief that our country's greatest days lay ahead, President Reagan inspired American confidence with his self-assurance, perpetual optimism, and gentle humor. Whether you agreed or disagreed with some of his Administration's policies, you could not help but like the man and appreciate his plainspoken leadership. He never succumbed to negative and personal partisanship, for at the end of the day, we are all Americans.

"I hope that Nancy and his family find solace and peace in the great affection and respect that all Americans have for President Reagan. His valiant fight against Alzheimer's over the past decade has been their battle as well, and they are in my prayers. God bless Ronald Reagan, Nancy Reagan, and their family."
