STATEMENT OF U.S. SENATOR DANIEL K. AKAKA ON THE DEATH OF GLADYS K. 'AINOA BRANDT

January 16, 2003
U.S. Senator Daniel K. Akaka (D-Hawaii) issued the following statement on learning of the death of Gladys K. 'Ainoa Brandt:

"Over the course of a career that spanned nearly six decades, Gladys Brandt championed education as paramount to the future and hope of the Native Hawaiian people as we worked to heal the wounds of the past and work for justice. Education was the key, she emphasized, not anger, fear or ignorance. She was exactly right, and her wisdom and mana'o have nurtured and inspired me and generations of students, educators, public servants, and leaders across Hawaii.

"Gladys Brandt was a trailblazer for women and Native Hawaiians as the first woman to serve as principal of a Hawaii public school and the first Native Hawaiian principal of the Kamehameha School for Girls, among her many professional achievements. Aunty Gladys was at the forefront of efforts to share and preserve the beauty and richness of Native Hawaiian language and culture. She was also a clear, reasoned, and calm voice for what was pono. I greatly valued her counsel on how to proceed in our efforts to provide a better future for the people of Hawaii. She was a valued member of the Native Hawaiian community working group which advised our Congressional delegation on federal recognition for Native Hawaiians.

"Aunty Gladys personified aloha through her grace and dignity. She commanded respect and was tough as nails when necessary. Through her perseverance and steadfastness she enriched all our lives and was a true living treasure. My thoughts and prayers are with her ohana during this time of profound sorrow."
