April 21, 2005   SENATOR COLLINS EMPHASIZES IMPORTANCE OF ELIMINATING FRAUD, WASTE & ABUSE IN FEDERAL PROGRAMS Subcommittee hearing today on President’s Management Agenda   Washington, DC – Senator Susan Collins today emphasized the importance of eliminating fraud, waste, and abuse in federal programs and the oversight role of the Senate in achieving efficient and transparent government operations. Senator Collins is the Chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, which is the chief governmental oversight committee for the Senate. During a hearing today of the Subcommittee on Federal Financial Management, Government Information, and International Security, Senator Collins said that it is important to ensure that federal agencies are spending taxpayers’ dollars wisely and efficiently through the oversight of their financial and information technology management. “More and more, financial management systems and technology play a key role in our ongoing efforts to combat fraud, waste and abuse. Our continued success in this area, then, will depend heavily on the proper functioning of these systems,” said Senator Collins. “Further, the failure of several high-profile federal IT systems, such as the FBI’s Trilogy program, are among the most prominent examples of wasteful federal spending in recent years.” The Subcommittee hearing today, which was chaired by Senator Tom Coburn, focused on the President's Management Agenda (PMA) for improving the management of the Federal government. The PMA focuses on five areas of management weakness across the government where improvements and the most progress can be made. “The PMA touches, in some way or other, on nearly every facet of the federal government’s operations, and is ambitious in its long-term goals of making government agencies more responsive, placing major emphasis on results rather than process, addressing overlapping functions, reducing turf battles, ensuring that tax dollars are well spent, and making the most of the talented men and women who serve our country as federal employees,” said Senator Collins.
