Mayor-A-Thon
Join Mayor Bernard P. Carvalho, Jr. in the first annual "Mayor-A-Thon" – an eight mile walk along Kauai’s coastal path "Ke Ala Hele Makalae." You can choose to walk 2, 4, 6 or the full 8 miles along Kauai’s beautiful coastline from Kapaa to Kuna Bay. The event will take place Saturday, June 27, from 7:00 am to 11:00 am, beginning at Kapaa Beach Park, and is co-sponsored by Get Fit Kauai (www.getfitkauai.com). Go to press releases section 5/11/2009 2:04:53 PM - Road closures for Visitor Industry Charity Walk - LĪHU‘E – The 31th annual Visitor Industry Charity Walk is scheduled this Saturday, starting at 7 am. The Charity Walk will begin at the Historic County Building, head down Rice St., turn left on Ho‘olako St., go up Ka‘ana St., left on Kapule Hwy., left on Ahukini Rd., left on Umi St., and end at the Historic County Building. To accommodate the Charity Walk, the Kauai Police Department will close off Rice and Ho‘olako streets for about 45 minutes starting at 6:45 am. Umi St. will be closed from about 6:45 am until the event is over.
 

Go to press releases section 5/11/2009 11:30:38 AM - National Police Week celebrated this week - LĪHU‘E – In recognition of National Police Week, a ceremony was held this morning at the Līhu'e Civic Center, Mo’ikeha Building. The theme for this year’s celebration is “Honoring those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.” “Police Week provides us with the opportunity to bring greater awareness to the essential role the Kaua'i Police Department plays in keeping our communities safe from harm,” said Mayor Bernard Carvalho, Jr. “It’s also a great time for citizens to thank police officers for their dedicated service and willingness to give up their lives to protect our lives and property.”
 

Go to press releases section 5/8/2009 5:21:25 PM - Two men arrested following traffic accident - KEĀLIA – Two Kapa‘a men, ages 30 and 48, were arrested and charged with second degree assault this morning, following an accident off Kūhi‘ō Highway near the entrance to Keālia Beach. The younger man was also charged with terroristic threatening and criminal property damage. Both men are currently being held in Police Cellblock. Bail for the younger man was set at $5,200, while the older man’s bail was $5,000.
 

Go to press releases section 5/7/2009 4:19:09 PM - Host community benefit meeting scheduled Monday - KEKAHA – The next meeting in a series of meetings to discuss the Kekaha Host Community Benefit (KHCB) program is scheduled on Monday, May 11. The meeting will be held at the Kekaha Neighborhood Center from 6 to 9 pm. The main topic of discussion will be the finalization of the Citizens Advisory Committee’s (CAC) survey, which will be used to develop recommendations for the expenditure of the HCB funds for Kekaha.
 

Go to press releases section 5/7/2009 2:48:17 PM - Mayor’s Aloha Garden yields first harvest - LĪHU‘E – Over 25 pounds of vegetables were harvested Tuesday from the Mayor’s Aloha Garden on the front lawn of the Kaua'i War Memorial Convention Hall and delivered to the Kaua'i Food Bank and The Salvation Army’s Soup Kitchen. Included in the bounty were the following vegetables: beets; cucumbers; curly parsley; green onions; Italian parsley; Manoa lettuce and other varieties of lettuce; peppers; purple basil; spicy basil; string beans; and sweet basil.
 

Go to press releases section 5/7/2009 9:41:27 AM - Registration for Summer Enrichment Program set for May 18 & 19 - LĪHU‘E – County officials announced that registration for the 2009 Summer Enrichment Program is scheduled for Monday, May 18, and Tuesday, May 19, from 8 am to 4 pm. Registration will be held at the following neighborhood centers including: Hanapēpē, 335-3731; Kapa‘a, 822-1931; Kalāheo, 332-9770; Kekaha, 337-1671; Kīlauea, 828-1421; Kōloa, 742-1313; and Līhu‘e, 241-6858. Sign-ups for King Kaumuali‘i and Wilcox Elementary schools will also be done at the Līhu‘e Neighborhood Center. Enrollment is limited and will be handled on a first-come, first-served basis. The registration fee is $90 per child. Payment must be made by check or money order payable to the Director of Finance.
 

Go to press releases section 5/6/2009 3:40:31 PM - KPD is asking for help with finding missing teens - LĪHU‘E – The Kaua‘i Police Department is asking for the public’s help with finding two missing teens. According to police, 15-year-old Hyran Kaukahi-Areilera left his home on March 27 and has not been seen since then. Kaukahi-Areilera is five feet four inches tall and weighs about 143 pounds. He has brown eyes and brown hair, a tan complexion and medium build. Kaukahi-Areilera is of Hawaiian descent. Sherlene Donna Yong-Borja, age 16, left her residence on April 17 and has not been seen since then. Police believe she may be in the company of her friend Kendrick. Yong-Borja is five feet one inch tall and weighs about 173 pounds. She has brown eyes and black hair, a tan complexion and medium build. Yong-Borja is of Hawaiian descent.
 

Go to press releases section 5/6/2009 9:40:47 AM - Connect-CTY test yields high response rate - LĪHU‘E – Seventy-seven percent of the telephones called during the county’s first test of its Connect-CTY system last Friday responded either via a live person or answering machine. “We are very pleased with the high response rate we received on our initial test of Connect-CTY, and would like to encourage those who haven’t had a chance to sign for this free service to do so,” said Mayor Bernard Carvalho, Jr. “In addition, residents or businesses whose published phone numbers have changed within the past year should call us and let us know what their current number if they would like to be notified about emergencies. The mayor noted that the county plans to use the mass notification service to quickly inform its citizens about civil defense emergencies including: tsunamis; hurricanes; earthquakes; flash floods; and any other situation that could impact the safety, property, or welfare of residents and visitors.
 

Go to press releases section 5/5/2009 3:03:48 PM - Two honored as Kaua‘i’s Outstanding Older Americans - LĪHU‘E – Janice Bond, of Līhu'e, and Dr. Arnulfo Diaz, of Kapa‘a, were named Kaua‘i’s 2009 Outstanding Older Americans. The announcement was made this morning at the 43rd annual Older American Awards Recognition Ceremony held at the Grand Hyatt Kaua'i Resort. The awardees were selected from a field of 10 nominees including: Federico Acoba, Jr.; Sheila Drews; Sandy Gage; Stephanie Hughes; Sally Jo Manea; Emily Minei; Mildred Olores; and Roy Tamashiro.
 

Go to press releases section 5/5/2009 2:51:53 PM - Public invited to meetings on Integrated Solid Waste Management Plan - LĪHU‘E – Two consecutive meetings on the county’s draft Integrated Solid Waste Management Plan (ISWMP) are scheduled on Tuesday, May 12, at the Kaua'i War Memorial Convention Hall. An information session will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 pm. Background information on how the ISWMP was developed along with a broad overview of the draft plan will be covered, followed by a question and answer period. Immediately afterward, a public hearing will be held. Anyone who would like to testify on the ISWMP during this period is encouraged to do so. Comments will also be accepted via e-mail to afraley@kauai.gov or to Allison Fraley, County of Kaua‘i, Solid Waste Division, 4444 Rice Street, Suite 275, Līhu'e, HI 96766. The deadline to submit comments is June 9.
 

Go to press releases section 5/5/2009 1:40:00 PM - May designated Great American Cleanup month - LĪHU'E – During the month of May, residents and visitors are encouraged to take part in the Great American Cleanup program. Participants will receive free garbage bags, coupons for discounts on selected cleaning products, and Keep the Hawaiian Islands Beautiful posters. Free paint and painting supplies are also available for Adopt-A-Park volunteers, as well as those who want to help eliminate graffiti at different locations around the island. The Great American Cleanup program is sponsored by the county and Keep the Hawaiian Islands Beautiful, a local affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, Inc.
