KGMB9: Volunteers Spend Saturday Cleaning Public Housing

August 16, 2008

More than 50 volunteers spent their Saturday clean up eight public housing units in Waipahu.

The volunteers, which included Bank of Hawaii employees and students came together to give the Kamalu Ho'olulu in Waipahu a badly needed facelift.

The event is a part of the "National Community Build Day" with projects taking place in all 50 states.

Guests such as Sen. Daniel Inouye and Daniel Akaka and congresswoman Mazie Hirono also pitched into help.

"This is a terrific project that brought together the YouthBuild people and Bank of Hawaii as part of the whole community project to basically get eight units in this project ready for occupancy for seniors," said Rep. Mazie Hirono.

"It's a great partnership, the government can't do it all, we need everyone in the community to pitch in. If everybody does a little bit, we can get it done," said Hawaii Public Housing Authority Chad Taniguchi.

Last year's Community Build Day raised over $3.8 million and helped over 3,000 families.
