Ohio's junior U.S. Senator, Sherrod Brown, is very proud of the desk he sits at in the U.S. Senate chamber. As well he should be, because his desk - like most of the 100 desks that form a semi-circle in the Senate Chamber - has a goodly slice of American history attached to it.

Since the early 20th century, senators have been carving their names inside the top of their desks, a quaint custom that notes their presence in the Capitol when momentous decisions were made.

Brown's desk has no less than 29 names carved into the desk top, beginning with Charles Allen Culberson, Democrat of Texas, who served there from 1899 to 1923.
