Dodd, Lieberman Announce COPS Grants to Five CT Towns

Total of $1,750,000 Awarded For New Officers in Schools

WASHINGTON - Senators Chris Dodd and Joe Lieberman, both D-Conn, today announced grants totaling $1,750,000 from the U.S. Justice Department's Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) to the towns of Bridgeport, Bristol, East Hartford, Hartford, and Old Saybrook. These COPS in Schools grants will allow law enforcement agencies to hire officers to provide security and public safety education services within local schools.

"Children should worry about tests and grades – not their personal safety," said Dodd. "This assistance will help children focus on learning, ultimately giving them a better education and brighter future down the road."

"By putting trained officers into Connecticut schools, this grant helps to ensure our classrooms remain safe learning environments," said Lieberman. "COPS officers also provide an invaluable service to our schools and our communities by giving our children a healthy awareness about crime prevention and educating them about the dangers of drug abuse."

The five grants will enable these Connecticut communities to hire fourteen new full time officers.

The recipients and the distribution of funds are as follows: City of Bridgeport - $625,000 (five new officers) Bristol Police Department - $125,000 (one new officer) Town of East Hartford - $500,000 (four new officers) City of Hartford - $375,000 (three new officers) Old Saybrook Police Department - $ 125,000 (one new officer)
