Dodd, Lieberman Announce Senate Approval Of Bill To Bolster Federal Funds For Connecticut Military Facilities

Measure provides assistance for New London Naval Base and Connecticut National Guard

Washington, D.C.- Thanks to the efforts of Senators Chris Dodd and Joe Lieberman the Senate today passed a measure that will provide funding for construction of several military facilities in Connecticut. The Senate bill provides more than $9 billion for military construction initiatives nationwide.

"It's essential - now more than ever - that our servicemen and-women receive top-notch care, facilities and military hardware," said Dodd. "This measure, while not everything I'd hoped for, will help do exactly that by providing essential resources for a stronger military and a better quality of life for Connecticut service men and women."

"Our military's strength is a crucial component to the continued war on terrorism," Lieberman said. "I'm pleased that the Connecticut men and women in the armed forces who contribute bravely to that fight will receive this additional support."

The bill contains the following provisions of importance to Connecticut military facilities:

  • $3 million to construct a Tomahawk Missle Magazine at Naval Submarine Base New London. This appropriation will fund construction of a high-tech storage facility for attack the submarines' tomahawk cruise missile.

  • $2.422 million for the Connecticut National Guard to build a new fire station at Stone Ranch Military Reservation.

  • $6.4 million for a Dental Clinic at Naval Base New London. The clinic provides services to military personnel and their families on base.

The funding for the Connecticut projects was included as part of the FY 2004 Military Construction Appropriations bill which provides resources for the building of military facilities including military family housing, training and operations centers and environmental clean-up after base closures.
