April 27, 2006

“Our nation can’t afford to wait – we need to immediately begin building at least two submarines per year. Our national security and our ability to protect our submarine industrial base depend upon it. And while this subcommittee approval doesn’t actually provide the funding to do that, it is important because it puts people on record that submarines should be a priority and not an afterthought. But no one should have any illusions as to the tough road ahead. These fights aren’t over until they are over. I intend to continue to fight for submarines and their increased production.”

1/19/06: Statement of Senator Dodd on Navy Secretary Winter Visit

January 19, 2006

"Sub Base New London and Electric Boat's workforce provide 'one stop shopping' for our nation when it comes to submarines. It's critically important that both remain vibrant and viable in the 21st century. Our nation's security depends upon it. So I commend the Secretary of the Navy for coming to Southeastern Connecticut to see how both act in concert to fulfill our nation's submarine needs. But this should be considered a first step, and not the last. I intend to continue to press the Bush Administration and the Navy to immediately increase submarine production because it is clear that our nation needs more submarines - and not less. We simply can't afford to continue to allow our submarine industrial base - which are the skilled workers at Electric Boat - to be lost."

It never made any sense to split up this family and I commend the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services office for reconsidering and ultimately reversing their decision. This is a great day for the Desardouin family, and I'm proud to have played a role in making it a reality."
