12/19/08: Dodd, Lieberman Announce New Federal Grant for Fire Departments Across Connecticut

Senators Chris Dodd (D-CT) and Joe Lieberman (ID-CT) announced today that fire departments in Farmington, Wallingford, Union, Meriden, Westport, and Woodstock have been awarded federal grants totaling more than $400,000. The funds will go to improving operations and safety at their facilities. The grants were made possible by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) program, which provides aid to first-responder programs nationwide with the aim of providing better equipment to protect the health and safety of the public, as well as that of the first-responders themselves. In fiscal year 2008, the AFG program has provided approximately $500 million in nationwide grants.


12/02/08: Dodd Statement on Meeting with the Indian Foreign Secretary

Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT), a senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and Chairman of its Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, Peace Corps, and Narcotics Affairs, released the following statement today after meeting with the Indian Foreign Secretary, Shivshankar Menon.

 

“I expressed my shock and sadness about the barbaric attacks in Mumbai to the Indian Foreign Secretary, Shivshankar Menon, and extended my sincere condolences to the people of India and to all those who have lost loved ones.  This tragic attack is a reminder that terrorism does not distinguish race, religion or national origin.  I call upon all nations in the region to work together to root out and dismantle the terrorist networks that continue to cause violence and heartache throughout South Asia, and I reaffirmed to the Foreign Secretary the United States’s commitment to those efforts.”

Senators Chris Dodd (D-CT) and Joe Lieberman (ID-CT) announced today that the Somers Volunteer Fire Department has been awarded a federal grant totaling $38,000. The funds will go to improving operations and safety at the facility. The grants were made possible by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) program, which provides aid to first-responder programs nationwide with the aim of providing better equipment to protect the health and safety of the public, as well as that of the first-responders themselves. In fiscal year 2008, the AFG program has provided approximately $500 million in nationwide grants.


11/14/08: Dodd, Lieberman Announce New Federal Grants for Waterbury Fire Department

Senators Chris Dodd (D-CT) and Joe Lieberman (ID-CT) announced today that the Waterbury Fire Department has been awarded federal grants totaling $648,000. The funds will go toward improving operations and safety at the facility and for vehicle acquisition. The grants were made possible by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) program, which provides assistance to first-responder programs nationwide with the aim of better equipping first-responders to protect the health and safety of the public, as well as that of the first-responders themselves. In fiscal year 2008, the AFG program has provided approximately $500 million in nationwide grants.


10/14/08: Dodd Swears in Members of the National Commission on Children and Disasters

Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT), a senior member of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions and the Chairman of its Subcommittee on Children and Families, today performed the swearing-in of members to the National Commission on Children and Disasters.  Dodd was the Senate sponsor of the legislation approved by Congress last year that created the Commission, which is charged with analyzing how the Federal government can better meet the specific needs of children before, during and after disasters.  The bill was endorsed by Save the Children, based in Westport, Connecticut.  Save the Children’s Vice President and Managing Director Mark Shriver is the elected Chairman of the Commission.

Senators Chris Dodd (D-CT) and Susan Collins (R-ME) today announced that October 5-11 will be recognized as “Fire Prevention Week.”  This designation was made possible by last night’s Senate approval of a resolution introduced by Dodd and Collins. 


9/29/08: Dodd, Lieberman Announce First Responder Assistance for Connecticut

Eleven Connecticut cities and towns will receive equipment worth a total of $148,870 to help improve first responder capabilities, Senators Chris Dodd and Joe Lieberman announced today. The equipment will be provided by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security under the Commercial Equipment Direct Assistance Program (CEDAP). The initiative provides resources such as communications interoperability equipment, information sharing technology, chemical detection devices, sensors, personal protective equipment, and rescue tools. The CEDAP also provides first responders with training in how to use the equipment, devices, and technology.


9/29/08: Dodd, Lieberman Announce $48,000 in Federal Grants for Stamford Fire Department

Senators Chris Dodd (D-CT) and Joe Lieberman (ID-CT) announced today that the Turn of River Fire Department in Stamford has received grants of $48,000 from the federal government.  The funds will support the recruitment and retention of volunteer firefighters.  The grants were made possible by a Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant, which helps increase the number of trained, front-line firefighters available in local communities, and is made possible through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) program, which provides assistance to first-responder programs nationwide.  In fiscal year 2008, the AFG program has provided approximately $500 million in nationwide grants.


9/23/08: Dodd, Collins, Lieberman Hail Senate Approval of Bill to Provide Additional Resources to U.S. Fire Fighters

Legislation Would Fund U.S. Fire Administration, National Fire Academy

Senators Chris Dodd (D-CT), Susan Collins (R-ME), and Joe Lieberman (ID-CT) today applauded Senate passage of legislation that would reauthorize and increase funding for the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA). The measure, authored by Dodd and Collins and cosponsored by Lieberman, would also expand the range of training programs offered at the National Fire Academy to ensure that America’s fire fighters are prepared to meet the growing demands on the fire service in the new century.


9/11/08: Dodd Statement on Anniversary of September 11th Attacks

Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT) released the following statement today in remembrance of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.  Today, Dodd will attend the dedication of the Pentagon Memorial to victims of the 9/11 attacks.

 

“Today, Jackie and I have the victims and family members of the innocent Americans who lost their lives in the attacks of September 11th in our thoughts and our prayers.  We will never forget that dreadful day and the unfathomable loss that our country suffered.
