A revised edition of the National Park Service management document was adopted on August 31, 2006. The policies provide servicewide direction for managing parks responsibly and making rational, well-informed decisions

The 2006 version incorporates the thoughts and concerns received from more than 45,000 citizens during a public review and comment period. The policies emphasize the importance of resource protection and address issues, including technological impacts, which were not as prevalent when the previous edition was published in 2001.

The policies are guided by and consistent with the Constitution, public laws, executive proclamations and orders, and regulations and directives from higher authorities.
