Environmental Awards
Wood Power! - PSNH’s Northern Wood Power Project (NWPP) permanently replaced a 50-megawatt coal-burning boiler at Schiller Station in Portsmouth, NH, with a state-of-the-art, wood-burning boiler of the same capacity, effectively reducing PSNH’s air emissions by more than 400,000 tons annually. The NWPP has been recognized with several awards, including:
2008 - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Air Excellence Award was presented to PSNH in recognition of the Northern Wood Power Project on May 28. The project was one of 11 national winners.
2007:
- The Environmental Business Council of New England’s award for “Outstanding New Environmental/Energy Technology or Application”
- The National Pollution Prevention Roundtable’s “Most Valuable Pollution Prevention (MVP2) Award”
- The New Hampshire DES “Governor’s Award for Pollution Prevention”
- The Green Organization’s “International Green Apple Award for Environmental Best Practices - North America” and the “Green Hero” award
- POWER Magazine’s 2007 “Marmaduke Award”
Other Environmental Awards
2003 - Newington Station received one of three 2002 Honorable Mention
Awards from the NH Governor's Pollution Prevention Program. The award
recognized PSNH's successful reduction of Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emissions
at Newington Station and was presented April 21st at the annual New Hampshire
Pollution Prevention Conference at the University of New Hampshire in Durham.
2002 - EPA Environmental Merit Award presented to PSNH and other
members of the Piscataqua River Cooperative (PRC) in recognition of the
PRC's commitment to the environment. The PRC was established in 1971 to
provide critical initial response capabilities in the Seacoast area.
1999 - EPA Merit Award presented to PSNH in recognition of the
company's unique "Grazing Power Project," that tested the use of sheep
to maintain vegetation in the company's transmission rights-of-way; and,
the award also recognized PSNH's successful efforts to reduce the emission
of nitrogen oxides at Merrimack Station in Bow.
1996 - Governor's Award for Pollution Prevention for installing
the SCR at Merrimack Station.
1996 - EPA Environmental Merit Award for installing the SCR at
Merrimack Station.
1996 - Edison Electric Institute (EEI) Special Distinction Award
for collaborating with government agencies and environmental groups
to develop an ozone reduction strategy to meet the Clean Air Act.
