The mission of the National Energy Education Development Project is to promote an energy conscious and educated society by creating effective networks of students, educators, business, government and community leaders to design and deliver objective, multi-sided energy education programs.

Welcome to the 2008-2009 NEED Year! Many new things are coming from NEED this year, including the availability of almost 90% of NEED curriculum guides organized by Grade Level, Subject Matter, and Title. In an effort to provide educators across the country and around the world with NEED materials at the click of a mouse, these guides are available in PDF for download.

Career Currents – January 2009
This issue focuses on professionals working in the fields of energy analysis and human resources, including three career interviews, and spotlights on ConocoPhillips and the Society of Petroleum Engineers.

Celebrate Energy Awareness Month 2008 with activities, resources, and ideas for local projects. NEED, the National Ocean Industries Association and the U.S. Minerals Management Service partnered to create the NOIA Activity Book. To request class-sets of the Activity Book please contact NEED at info@need.org.

Kentucky NEED, in partnership with the Kentucky Department for Energy Development and Independence, is facilitating four regional Energy Management Workshops for Schools on February 24, 26, March 5 and 6.  Learn more about the one-day events for teachers and administrators by downloading the conference brochure (pdf).

ComEd and NEED partner to provide the Illinois Energy Workshop series and the Illinois Solar Schools Workshops in their service area. To learn more about the program and to register for workshops visit the "About the ComEd Program" section.
The American Electric Power Foundation provided a grant to NEED to provide 4th grade students throughout the AEP Service area - Virginia, West Virginia, Tennessee, Ohio, Kentucky, Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Indiana, Michigan and Texas - with a compact fluorescent lightbulb to take home and install with their families to promote the EnergyStar Change-a-Light program and to learn more about energy efficiency. Energy Exchange - November 2008
The activities in this newsletter focus on hydropower. Primary students make a water wheel, elementary students discover how height impacts the force of water, intermediate students learn more about the different ways to use water to produce electricity in a fun new game, and secondary students take on different roles to determine what a city should do about using hydropower to meet their energy needs. NEED is pleased to launch the TXU Energy Solar Academy with TXU Energy in Texas. The program includes solar installations, classroom kits and curriculum, and teacher training. For more information visit the TXU Energy Solar Academy.

NEED and ConocoPhillips have partnered to host 24 workshops in 15 communities across the country. To register for a workshop near you visit the ConocoPhillips section of the NEED website.
NEED partners with Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) on the PG&E Solar Schools Program in the PG&E service area. Apply for training, PV installations, and grants.

The NEED Project supports ENERGY STAR®'s 2008-2009 Change the World, Start with ENERGY STAR® Campaign. Our goal is to encourage at least 1,000 individuals to take the Pledge.
