WALSH SECURES AGRICULTURE RESEARCH AND CONSERVATION FUNDING IMPORTANT TO NEW YORK STATE

     
     

(Washington D.C.)- The House Appropriations Committee this week passed the FY 2008 Agriculture Appropriations bill.  Included were multiple funding items secured by Congressman Jim Walsh important to area agriculture interests and environmental protection efforts:

 

$594,000 for pastureland management/rotational grazing to continue the successful Graze NY program in Central New York;
 

$321,750 for best watershed management practices in the Skaneateles and Owasco Lake watersheds by the Onondaga County Soil and Water Conservation District;
 

$495,000 to the Onondaga County Soil and Water Conservation District to address non-point source pollution in the Otisco, Onondaga, and Oneida Lake watersheds;
 

$2,690,000 for the Center for Grape Genetics Research in Geneva;
 

$186,000 for the continuation of a wood biomass as an alternative farm product demonstration program at SUNY-ESF;
 

$990,000 in APHIS’s Wildlife Services Program for the continuation of hazing programs to manage the growth of cormorants in New York State;
 

$594,000 to continue the Farm Animal Identification and Records Program (FAIR) under APHIS.
 

Walsh was also instrumental in securing important viticulture ($2,079,000), apple fireblight ($495,000), food safety ($990,000), livestock and dairy policy ($990,000), human nutrition ($540,000) research funding for Cornell University facilities in Geneva and Ithaca.

 

Walsh is a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee.  The bill is expected to be considered by the full House of Representatives in the next several weeks.
